History On African-American Spirituals

 For today's blog i'm going to be giving you guys information about African-American Spirituals. I choose this genre because I've heard about in during one of my history classes before, but we didn't really dig deeper into it. With that being said i'm interested to learn more. African-American Spirituals are songs created by Africans who were captured and brought and sold into slavery. They are also known as Negro spirituals. Although it's impossible to determine when the first spirituals were created, most people believe near the end of the eighteenth century.Their languages, family, and culture were stripped from them, but they could not take away their music. The original composers of these songs are unknown. Their songs became known a spirituals. This music was inspired by African music. Interviewing My Grandma

 Hey guys so for my interview I decided to pick my Grandma. I decided to pick her because I knew she would have a lot to say about todays generation of music lol. She is not a fan of it all so I knew her response would be interesting. This is an over the phone interview because I did not go home for fall break. Anyways here is how the interview went... Me: Grandma what type of music did you most listen to when you were younger?     Grandma: Mostly rap, gospel, and slow R&B. When I was younger the music I had access to was limited. Me: What is your favorite type of music?     Grandma: Gospel.  Me: Why?     Grandma: My momma would play it around the house every morning before we went off to school. Stepping Into South Africa Music

 As I watched the video of Toumani Diabate play the Kora instrument I wanted to learn more about it because it looked interesting. It has a unique sound to it. The Kora is a stringed instrument mainly used in West Africa. Its the king of instruments in the Griot culture. It typically 21 strings. It's played by plucking the strings with your fingers. There are small pieces of shells that create a rattle like sound when the strings are plucked. Its has features of the harp and the lute. The sound of this instrument resembles the sound of a harp. Its built from a small calabash and covered with cow skin. Learning to play this instrument requires extreme discipline.
